Our Mission
To provide refuge, education, prevention, intervention, and therapeutic
services to youth at-risk in our Central New Mexico communities.
Our Philosophy
A New Day refuses to accept the idea that any child is unlovable and deserves to live on the streets, or that parents are failures. We believe we make a difference in our community through the programs we offer to nurture our children and educate our families.
Who We Are
A New Day is a 501c3 multi-service agency providing clinical services, educational programs, and emergency shelter to over 550 low income, at-risk youth and their families annually at three out-patient offices, The Shelter, and many school sites.
  • Clinical Services offers a variety of brief therapy techniques.
  • Community Support Workers link clients to additional resources and services.
  • Educational Programs offers gender-specific groups and collaborative school based programs.
  • The Shelter facility provides short-term housing for homeless youth.
  • We provide sites for University interns to practice in social service fields.
  • We collaborate with law enforcement to provide alternative to juvenile detention.
  • We provide services to the uninsured and under-insured through the C.A.T.S. Program.

    A New Day is funded by county, state and federal grants, the United Way,
    private foundations, and community contributors.
  • What Inspires Us
    We received a call recently that took us back a few years to our Emergency Shelter at Sigma Chi on the University of New Mexico campus. Replaced by our current Shelter in 1998, this short-term facility had 12 beds with a maximum stay of only 10 days. The caller was Rochelle, who was 13 years old when she came to the Shelter after being severely abused by her brother and neglected by her drug-addicted mother.

    At first, the structure and rules at the Shelter were intimidating; responsibilities and expectations were new to her. She experienced things in her Shelter stay that many of us take for granted: people noticed her, expressed interest in her, listened to her, and complimented her. She learned how to be "a part of" by participating in house meetings and other group activities. Her experience with A New Day was her first glimpse of a positive future.

    In spite of a traumatic and difficult childhood, Rochelle has turned her life around. She began by trying to prove that she wasn't going to grow up to be her mother, but her goals expanded and matured with age. Her mission now is to help kids realize that life doesn't have to be a dead-end street. She is working on her Ph.D. in Child Psychology, is a member of the Honor Society, and is on the Dean's List. She works full time, goes to school, and is mother to three delightful sons. Rochelle shared with us the positive influences in her life, including the staff at A New Day who challenged her to reach beyond...
