The New Day Youth & Family Services Life Skills Academy is for youth ages 16-22 who are looking to develop key skills to improve their emotional intelligence, social intelligence/social capital, and functional intelligence. Classes are held each week in the evening and on weekends.

What youth learn

A sample of some life skills topics include but are not limited to: safe and healthy bodies, financial literacy, communication and job readiness course blocks, shopping for success, etc. A focus is to provide classes in locations that have high value to the youth to learn from, for example grocery shopping is taught in various stores throughout town. Classes are held in both convenient locations and those that teach youth skills in correlative settings (i.e. grocery stores, credit unions, UNM, etc.) We utilize the Ansell Casey life skills assessment to facilitate youth choosing classes that are most pertinent to their individual needs.

McLeod Life Skills Academy

As of November 2013 we have opened the McLeod Life Skills Academy at 2820 Ridgecrest Drive SE 87108. This location is conveniently located next to our shelter and has transitional living apartments attached. To get a tour of the McLeod Life Skills Academy or to learn more contact 505-938-1060.

Who attends the Life Skills Academy?

Diverse groups of youth attend and participate in the community to classes: CYFD (all over the state), foster families, CASAs, other agencies, etc. We look to build partnerships with other organizations to teach classes. Some of our current partners are Children Youth and Families Department, Building Futures and Foundations Hogares.
