C.A.T.S. is A New Day's latest effort to meet the growing needs of Central New Mexico's at-risk youth and
struggling families. Currently in the final planning and implementation stage, we're excited about sharing this new program with you.
What's C.A.T.S. all about?
The C.A.T.S. program mission is to make prevention, intervention, educational, and therapeutic services available to uninsured and underinsured children, adolescents, and their families seeking assistance in Central New Mexico, regardless of their financial status or ability to pay.
Why is C.A.T.S. needed?
  •   Our regional High School graduation rate in 2005 was below 55%. Among these students, 20% seriously considered suicide, 30% used marijuana, and 31% were binge drinkers.
  •   Current statistics from the KIDS COUNT Data Center include:
           a) Over 22% of the region's children live at or below the federal poverty level.
           b) 38% of children statewide and 74% in the Albuquerque Metro area live in single-parent households
           c) 40% of these single-parent families statewide live below the poverty level
           d) Over 18% of New Mexico's children are uninsured (compared to 11% nationwide)
These are some of the factors contributing to a climate of physical and emotional insecurity leading to poor scholastic performance, family turmoil, high-risk behavior, and court involvement.
  • Who is C.A.T.S. for?
The program targets children, adolescents, and their families struggling with emotional, physical, and sexual abuse; trauma and loss; family disruptions; poverty and homelessness; and parental incarceration. These negative life issues create an environment of family instability deficient in the consistent, nurturing, and cohesive support young people need to thrive and mature. Youth and their families facing these issues, seeking help, but unable to access services are the population we serve with the C.A.T.S. Program.
    Where is C.A.T.S. focused?
  •   Clients are referred by schools, CYFD, juvenile justice, families and community providers.
  •   The Special Needs population is able to access services otherwise unavailable.
  •   A Service Plan is created designating the appropriate C.A.T.S. Tracks to meet the presenting needs.
  •   Specific goals are set to create awareness, tools & strategies to improve self-efficacy utilizing:

C.A.T.S. Tracks end with Family Nights providing time for clients and their parents
to share experiences and look forward to the future. center>

C.A.T.S. is proactive in referring clients and families to additional community programs and
services to help assure that future is a positive one.
