Clinical Services Empower Clients to Create Better Lives
We give hope, support, new skills, and guidance to adolescents and families who are having a difficult time. Our programs and services help people put their lives back together and develop skills to better deal with life's complexities.

Our clinical services are offered in a variety of places, including the Shelter, outpatient offices, and many local schools. We are community-oriented and work closely with other statewide and local youth-based agencies, the juvenile justice system, schools, and hospitals.

Therapy for Difficult Times
  •   Crisis intervention
  •   Parenting and Social Skills Building
  •   Brief therapy for individuals and families including:
                 Trauma and grief counseling
                 Anger management
                 Substance use and abuse
                 Values clarification
                 Making healthy choices
                 Increasing self-esteem
  •     Brief Therapy
    Brief Therapy is strategic, exploratory, and solution-based rather than problem-oriented. It is centered more on current factors sustaining an issue and preventing change, and less on how it arose in the first place. A sampling of Brief Therapy techniques used in Clinical Services includes:

    Sand Tray Therapies:  Sand play is a valuable medium for expressing emotional issues that are not verbalized. Through the creation of sand trays, children can delve deeper into what is troubling them in a playful, non threatening environment.

    Play Therapies:  The natural benefits of play allow children a safe distance from their problems, freeing them to express their true thoughts and feelings in ways best suited to their developmental level.

    Equine Assisted Learning  In a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and an equine professional, horses are used experientially for emotional growth and learning. Participants learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses, and then processing (or discussing) feelings, behaviors, and patterns.

    Community Support Services
    Community Support (formerly Case Management) is a collaborative process of assessment, planning, skills development, and advocacy designed to help clients meet therapeutic goals as well as addressing the needs of youth and their families.

    Community Support Workers network with clients and families to develop individualized Service Plans designed
    to achieve established therapeutic goals and address their specific needs. These can include assistance with
    navigating government systems like New Mexico Medicaid as well as help with:

          *    Housing               *    Utilities
          *    Food                   *    Clothing
          *    Education            *    School supplies
          *    Health care          *    Daycare
          *    Transportation

    Life Skills Training
  •   Because youth seeking services are often victims of neglect, domestic abuse, or simply unwanted, they often lack the basic skills and knowledge necessary to become independent young adults.
  •   Life Skills training is designed to assist clients in developing skills that enable them to succeed in school and grow into competent and caring adults. These include making informed decisions, communicating more effectively, self-management, and coping skills.
  •   Focus areas include:
                      Choices and Consequences           Social Skills
                      Self-Knowledge                              Education
                      Employability                                 Problem Solving
                      Communication                              Relationships
                      Money Management                       Independent Living
  •   Participants learn to define their job skill potential, practice mock interviews, learn appropriate responses to intimidating or threatening behaviors, and become more informed about the dangers of drug and alcohol use and abuse.

    Tristan

    A 7 year old boy we'll call "Tristan" had a father who abused him physically and sexually. Tristan found it hard to relax or experience feelings. He had difficulty sleeping, had nightmares, as well as periods of irritability and sadness.

    Time, structure, a safe environment, and diverse therapeutic methods allowed this young boy the opportunity to address the devastating effects of trauma. His strong will and motivation provided him the inner strength to recover. Tristan is now an "A" student, with a close group of friends, and is now enjoying his life again.

    Daisy

    Fearful of her future, "Daisy" came to A New Day's Clinical Services with her older sister to ask for help. Daisy is a senior in high school, with alcoholic parents, and a serious medical condition that prevents her from driving. She faced an uncertain future and was worried about how she would survive on her own after graduation.

    Since Daisy's parents aren't able or willing to financially assist her, the Community Support Worker provided her with access to affordable assisted living facilities, transportation services, potential college and financial aid options.

    Despite her neglectful and abusive upbringing, Daisy has become an intelligent, fun-loving young woman. Her Therapist helped Daisy deal with her feelings of anger and resentment towards her parents and their alcoholism. With the help of A New Day, the support of her sister and a close group of friends - Daisy is confident and excited about her future.
