Purpose
A New Day's Reception and Assessment Centers (RAC) are designed to divert first-offender youth ages 8 to 17 who've committed status offenses or low level misdemeanors away from juvenile incarceration and towards community-based services.

NOTE: all referrals are made by law enforcement personnel.
Youth Eligible for Services
  • Youth taken into custody for a status offense (i.e. illegal behavior of a minor, although that same behavior would not be criminal if committed by an adult).
  • Youth committing non-violent misdemeanors and those taken into protective custody
  •   Common types of referrals include:
               Runaway from home or placement
               Criminal trespass, shoplifting, disorderly conduct
Classroom disruption leading to removal from school and truancy

  • Services Provided to Youth
  • Intake identifies youth and gathers family information for demographic purposes
  • Crisis Intervention works with both the youth and parents towards resolving immediate concerns
  • Risk Assessment gathers information about the youth's current situation and possibility of reoffending.
  • Therapy for both individuals and families is available if requested.
  • Short-term Shelter if needed as an alternative to the streets for youth who can't return home
  • Diversion from Juvenile Justice through this preventative and community based program.
  • Referrals through Community Support Services to additional community agencies and resources.

NOTE: Uncooperative youth or those who refuse community intervention are referred to Juvenile Probation.
