● How? |
When possible, New Day will also speak with the parents, and together with the young person will address the most urgent issues that will help to keep the youth out of deeper involvement with the juvenile justice system. When appropriate New Day will also make referrals to community agencies that can help provide helpful, needed longer-term services.
● What? |
The Reception Assessment Center is designed to provide law enforcement and juvenile justice an alternative to incarceration for youth who have been detained for low level misdemeanor or felony offences, and who do not score high enough on the risk assessment tool (RAIS) to be incarcerated.
● Why? |
One of the best markers of a young person who will end up in the juvenile justice system is that they have been there before. The recidivism rate is high and there is little evidence that the outcomes of incarceration are positive.
New Day’s detention diversion program provides the community with a proven alternative that has a track record of keeping young people from further involvement with the justice system.
