● How? |
|
The I’d Eat That! Kitchen is a paid internship that takes a “soup to nuts” approach to a real job experience. That means we focus on the application process, the interview process, and learning how to “be” in a job.
In the internship, the “job” includes making empanadas and pasts from scratch and exploring other cuisines of interest. Participants will also gain food safety and sanitation experience with the possibility of earning a Food Handlers’ Certificate. There is also time for youth to be creative and craft an empanada that can be added to our existing menu! We utilize a team approach and you will meet with other peers from around the community. You will have access to a Life Skills Coach who will help with building your résumé and assisting in the employment arena after completion of the internship.

● What? |
|
The I’d Eat That! Kitchen internship is an 8-10 week training period.
We concentrate on 6-8 competencies that are structured to give participants the necessary tools to both gain and maintain employment. Some of the competencies discussed in the curriculum include Personal Responsibility, Attitude, and Communication. We also focus on ServSafe competencies which include kitchen safety and sanitation. Participants can take a test and receive their Food Handlers’ certificate which can provide a “leg up” on finding employment.
Participants will graduate with a completed résumé and are assigned a Life Skills Coach to support with all of the employment pieces as well as other life goals acting as a personal guide throughout the internship with the option of continuing with coaching after completing the program. As an Empanada Artist, participants will create fresh homemade empanadas that we also sell to the public. We use the skills from the classroom and incorporate them into everyday workplace interactions throughout the internship. All of the learned skills are transferable to any entry level job in the work field.

● Why? |
|
We know how challenging it can be for young people to obtain that first job experience. Armed with an up-to-date résumé, actual work experience, and practice, participants will also improve their interview skills and will gain the confidence to engage in the job seeking process. There are also certificates available to earn along the way for participants to add to their employment qualifications and skills list to help stand out to potential employers. These skills have been identified by employers in the workforce as what makes an “ideal” and sought after employee
