● What? |
New Day’s Life Skills Academy has a variety of supports and services that we offer under our umbrella. All of our services are free of charge and are designed to be a low barrier, easy access point for connecting to New Day services and supports community-wide. The purpose of the Life Skills Academy is to learn and practice life skills, to build Inner Wealth and to create opportunities for young people to experience success. The Life Skills Academy aims to build protective factors in all young people in hopes to ignite their spark to create positive pathways forward out of homelessness and disconnection.
● Why? |
|
Community connection is important, it allows you to meet your mentors, learn about opportunities in your city, and grow your skills toolbox. Our classes are fun, exciting, enriching, social, and a great way to achieve your goals in a sustainable way.
● First Jobs Opportunity: I’d Eat That! Kitchen (ages 16-24):
The I'd Eat That! Kitchen Internship is one opportunity New Day offers for young people to gain employment experience and build job readiness skills to prepare for future long-term success. The I'd Eat That! Kitchen Internship is a three month paid internship opportunity to develop hands-on skills working in the food industry, to receive mentoring and instruction from professionals and community partners and to be part of a new, innovative project!
Chef Pam, among others, works with 8-10 young people each session; there are total of 3 full sessions each year in addition. In partnership with the National Restaurant Association Education Forum (NRAEF) Restaurant Ready program, the young people develop employability skills during the three month sessions that focus on building 6 work-ready competencies (i.e. Personal Responsibility, Communication, Attitude, Learning, Customer Service/empathy, and Industry Specific Skills) in addition to deep dives into financial literacy and self-care. The young people also have the opportunity to get their Food Handler’s Certificate (on us) to give them a leg up on getting employment in the food industry.
Throughout the session there is ongoing education not only in the kitchen, but throughout the community where they can hone newly learned skills by interacting with the public and where they can experience and explore various employment opportunities and career pathways. One of the intangibles of the internship/continued training opportunities is to help young people “find their spark,” grow Inner Wealth and if possible, connect them with members of the community who may be able to foster that spark.
