Street Outreach
New Mexico is ranked 46th in the nation in youth homelessness according to the National Center on Family Homelessness. New Day's Street Outreach program proactively seeks out and engages young people who are unhoused. These young people can be at risk or victims of violence, sexual abuse, sex trafficking and other significant traumas while living on the streets. People say the first night on the streets is the most dangerous night, we are working to reduce the number of nights young people are sleeping on the streets.
● How? |
|
The primary charge of New Day's Street Outreach Team is engagement. We understand that engagement with the young people we serve is challenging and delicate and occurs in phases. The team will provide a range of ways for young people to connect, from meeting short-term needs - hygiene products, food, first aid, transportation - to longer term help such as safe and stable housing, access to employment, and reengagement with education.
The goals of street outreach are to help these young people see and know their strengths, acknowledge their trauma, and help them develop their own unique pathway to positive community inclusion and a safe, stable and quality life.

● What? |
|
New Day's Street Outreach is a dynamic and mobile engagement program based in the Albuquerque metro area that seeks to engage unhoused youth under the age of 21.
Young people in these situations are often afraid to connect with formal support networks due to negative past experiences and fear of "system" involvement. Research shows they are more willing to engage with low-barrier support systems like New Day's Street Outreach Team and Drop-in Center.

According to the federal government, young people under the age of 24 are the fastest growing segment of our population experiencing homelessness. Street Outreach wants to interrupt that reality early and effectively and create authentic options for young people.
